They can also help protect the body from certain diseases. Fruits usually contain seeds and come from the flower of plant, while the rest of plant is considered a vegetable. Excluded are the following

  • Medicinal or herbal plants and spices unless they are used as vegetables.
  • Nuts, seeds, and oil seeds such as coconuts, walnuts and sunflower seeds.

Grains

A grain is a small, hard, dry seed that is harvested from cereal plants oats, corn, rice and wheat. Other less common grains include millet, barley, rye and sorghum. Like wheat, many of these grains grow in clusters called ears on each stem. Each grain are is protected by a hard outer covering called a husk, and inside it is the actual seed. Some grains can be eaten whole, while other are ground into flour before being used in food product.

Grains are made up of  three main part: bran, endosperm, and germ. The bran is the hard outer layer that contain fiber. The endosperm is the middle layer and provide energy. The germ is the inner part that contains important nutrients such as vitamins and healthy fats. When all three parts are present in their natural proportions, the grain is called a whole grain. Grains are generally divided into two main groups: whole grains and refined grains.


Whole Grains



Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel, including the bran, germ, and endosperm. Because all parts of the grain are preserved, whole grains are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are considered healthier than refined grains because no important nutrients are removed during processing. Eating whole grains helps improve digestion, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Whole grains also provide long-lasting energy, which makes them an important part of a balanced diet.

Example of whole grains include whole wheat flour, brown rice, oatmeal, barley, millet and bulgur (cracked wheat). 

Refined Grains



Refined grains are grains that have been milled to remove the bran and germ. This process gives the  grains a finer texture and extends their shelf life. However milling also removes important nutrients such as dietary fiber, iron and several vitamins. common examples of refined grain products include white bread and white rice.

Protein is an essential macro nutrient required for various vital functions in the human body. It plays a key role in growth, tissue repair and enzyme production. In addition to their industrial uses, fats and oils are an essential component of a balanced and healthy diet. Chemically, they are composed of glycerol combined with three fatty acids, forming compounds known as triglycerides. Most commonly, dietary fats and oil are derived from plant sources, including palm oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil and cocoa butter.

Functions of Fats and Oils in the Human Body

Soft Diet





A soft diet consists of foods that are easily chewed, swallowed and digested, requiring minimal effort from the mouth and digestive system. A soft diet is a diet that includes soft, chopped, ground and pureed foods that can be easily mashed with a fork. They are easily chewed swallowing them, and they are easy to digest.
